The Labour Party has announced Hajja Bintu Konto as the vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
She will contest alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, as the party prepares for the next presidential election.
The announcement was made on Saturday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa.
He said the decision followed consultations with important stakeholders within the party and was made to present a leadership team the party believes has the experience, integrity and ability to serve Nigerians.
According to the party, Konto has spent more than 30 years working in the areas of healthcare, humanitarian services and community development.
Before her retirement, she worked with Catholic Relief Services, where she held several leadership positions, including Community and Government Liaison Officer.
During her years of service, she was involved in humanitarian activities across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
Her work focused on coordinating support for internally displaced persons and other vulnerable communities affected by conflict and insecurity.
The party also said Konto is a trained nurse, midwife and public health specialist.
She holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and has also served as a lecturer in Community Health. In addition, she is a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria and currently serves as the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
Labour Party noted that Konto is fluent in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, adding that her language skills have helped her work closely with government officials, traditional rulers and civil society organisations on projects involving healthcare, nutrition, water and sanitation, as well as humanitarian programmes.
The party said her emergence reflects its commitment to promoting gender inclusion, national unity and experienced leadership from different parts of the country.
It added that her background in public service and humanitarian work brings valuable experience to the presidential ticket, particularly in addressing issues affecting women, children and communities facing insecurity.
Labour Party also described the Okereke-Konto ticket as a team that intends to provide people-focused leadership, strengthen public institutions, improve security, revive the economy and restore public confidence in governance.
The party called on Nigerians to support its presidential ticket as preparations continue for the 2027 general election.
