The United States government has announced plans to deport 124 Nigerians who were convicted of various criminal offences.
According to a statement published on the website of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the affected individuals have been placed on what the agency described as its “worst-of-the-worst” criminal register.
The statement, released on Wednesday, included the names and photographs of those scheduled for deportation but did not state when the deportation process would begin.
The DHS said the individuals were arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in line with directives from President Donald Trump.
According to the agency, those listed were convicted of serious offences, including sexual assault, drug trafficking and money laundering.
The statement read:
“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is highlighting the worst of worst criminal aliens arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Under DHS leadership, the hardworking men and women of DHS and ICE are fulfilling President Trump’s promise and carrying out mass deportations – starting with the worst of the worst – including the illegal aliens you see here.”
The list released by the department includes 124 Nigerians identified by the U.S. authorities as part of those marked for deportation.
The Department of Homeland Security has not announced a date for when the deportation of the affected individuals will begin.
