A personal assistant to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has resigned from his position and declared support for Labour Party candidate Chima Anyaso ahead of the 2027 National Assembly election in Abia State.
The resignation was contained in a letter dated May 8, 2026, although it only became public after it was shared on Facebook by Promise Okoro.
In the letter addressed to the Deputy Speaker through the Secretary of Human Resources and Staff Development of the National Assembly, Ugochukwu Nwankwo said he stepped down to avoid any conflict of interest as political campaigns gather pace ahead of the 2027 general election.
Nwankwo also thanked Kalu for giving him the opportunity to serve as his personal assistant during his time in office.
Okoro, who made the resignation letter public, also announced that he and Nwankwo had decided to support Chima Anyaso, the Labour Party candidate seeking to represent Bende Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Anyaso will challenge Kalu, who currently represents the constituency and is seeking another term in office under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
