President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to allocate a large parcel of land along the Airport Road corridor in Abuja for the establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Africa Resource Centre.

The President also approved federal funding for the construction of the centre, which is expected to serve as a hub for research, dialogue, peacebuilding and public service learning across Africa.

The approval was announced during the 84th birthday celebration of former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, held in Abuja.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu at the event, conveyed the Federal Government’s commitment to the project.

According to him, the President had already reviewed the design of the proposed centre and approved government funding for its construction.

The event also featured the public presentation of books highlighting Abdulsalami’s life, leadership journey and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic transition.

Political leaders, associates and supporters gathered to reflect on his years of service to the nation.

President Tinubu described the proposed resource centre as a fitting tribute to Abdulsalami, noting his role in steering Nigeria through a critical period that led to the end of military rule.

He said the former Head of State fulfilled his promise to return the country to democratic governance after assuming office in 1998.

According to the President, Abdulsalami’s leadership paved the way for the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1999, which remains Nigeria’s longest uninterrupted period of civilian rule.

Tinubu also noted that Abdulsalami’s contributions extended beyond his time in office, adding that the former military leader has remained actively involved in peacebuilding and mediation efforts within Nigeria and across the African continent through various platforms and committees.

The President commended Abdulsalami’s enduring commitment to peace, democracy and national development, describing his legacy as one that continues to inspire future generations.
