Governor Seyi Makinde has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2027 general elections, saying Nigeria urgently needs a reset.

Makinde made the declaration on Thursday during a mega-rally held to announce a political alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples’ Movement in Ibadan.

The Oyo State governor expressed concern over what he described as the worsening economic realities facing Nigerians, insisting that citizens can no longer remain passive observers.

According to him, the country requires urgent political realignment and active civic engagement to restore hope.

“Without a multi-party system, there is no democracy. Where is our multi party? Where do we go from here?” he asked.

Makinde said opposition parties must put aside their differences and work together to rescue the country.

“We have been pushed to the wall. The calculated and self opposition cannot unite but I am here to say that the opposition is the everyday Nigerian.”

He urged Nigerians to rise and actively participate in shaping the nation’s future.

“This is the time for all us to ensure Nigeria works for us. This is the time to confront its fears. It is time to engage as citizens and not spectators.”

Makinde declares for President

The governor described the newly announced alliance between the PDP and APM as the beginning of a broader coalition aimed at challenging the ruling establishment in 2027.

He said the alliance would field candidates for all elective offices, from the presidency to state assembly seats.

“The time to reset Nigeria is now. Ibadan is the city of warriors. The first grand alliance is formed. The PDP and APM handshake will allow us to field candidates from presidency to state Assembly.”

He then formally announced his bid for Nigeria’s highest office.

“And so, I declare my candidacy for office of the president of Nigeria.”

Makinde’s declaration positions him among the growing list of politicians already signalling interest in the 2027 presidential race.

Political analysts believe his entry could reshape opposition dynamics, particularly within the PDP, where several influential figures are also expected to seek the party’s ticket.

What You Should Know

Seyi Makinde’s declaration adds a significant new dimension to the unfolding 2027 presidential contest.

As one of the few PDP governors with strong grassroots appeal and visible governance credentials, his entry could influence coalition-building efforts within the opposition. The alliance between the PDP and APM signals an early attempt at political realignment aimed at consolidating opposition strength ahead of the elections.

However, Makinde is likely to face stiff competition within his party from other presidential hopefuls, making internal negotiations and party consensus crucial to his eventual prospects.
