Prominent politicians and influential business figures in Ebonyi State have resigned their membership from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), sparking fresh political tension in the state.
The resignations come less than one week after a consultative stakeholders’ meeting convened by Governor Francis Nwifuru, where consensus candidates were selected to contest National Assembly and House of Assembly elections on the platform of the APC.
Among those who exited the APC following the emergence of the consensus candidates are Chief Christian Asaga Nwali, a well-known business mogul in the state, Chief Chibuike Orogwu, another notable businessman, and Emmanuel Ofoke, alongside several others.
In separate resignation letters, the affected members attributed their decisions to personal reasons.
In a letter dated May 1, 2026, and addressed to the APC Ward Chairman in Ikwo Local Government Area, Nwali explained that his decision followed careful reflection on recent developments within the party.
Similarly, Orogwu, in his resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register, while expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the APC.
Meanwhile, the 2023 governorship candidate of APGA and former Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Bernard Odoh, also announced his resignation from the party.
Odoh explained that his departure was informed by what he described as inadequate involvement in party affairs despite being a member of APGA’s Board of Trustees.

In his resignation letter dated May 4, 2026, and addressed to the Omege Ward Chairman in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Odoh stated that the decision came after careful reflection.
“In recent times, I have not been sufficiently abreast of developments within the party at the level required of a member of its Board of Trustees,” he stated.
He added that his decision was driven by the need to ensure “institutional coherence and effective stewardship,” noting that stepping aside would create room for more engaged and aligned leadership within the party.
Odoh also expressed appreciation to both the state and national leadership of APGA for the confidence reposed in him during his time in the party.
Despite his exit, he reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of Ebonyi State and Nigeria.
“My commitment to the unity, stability, and development of our state and nation remains unwavering, and I shall continue to support all sincere efforts directed towards the advancement of the common good,” he added.
The wave of resignations has intensified speculation about possible political realignments in Ebonyi ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially as discontent grows over internal party arrangements and consensus-based candidate selections.
