Kano Assembly Confirms New Deputy Governor

The Kano State House of Assembly has formally confirmed Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, bringing to a close a period of uncertainty in the state’s executive leadership that followed the resignation of his predecessor.

The confirmation was secured during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Isma’il Falgore, after Garo was put through a rigorous screening exercise conducted by an ad hoc committee of the House.

The session drew considerable attention from political observers and stakeholders across the state, many of whom had been watching the process closely since the vacancy emerged.

The path to Garo’s confirmation began with the resignation of former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, which created a constitutional gap at the heart of Kano’s executive arm.

Under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, such vacancies cannot be allowed to linger. Section 191(3)(c) expressly empowers a state house of assembly to screen and approve a gubernatorial nominee to fill the position—a clause that lawmakers moved quickly to invoke.

Presenting the committee’s report to the full House, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello, who chaired the ad hoc screening committee, confirmed that the nomination of Garo by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had been received and processed strictly in accordance with that constitutional provision.

“The nomination was made in line with the provisions of the law, and this House has acted accordingly,” Bello noted, signaling the legislature’s commitment to due process throughout the exercise.

The screening itself, sources within the Assembly revealed, was no rubber-stamp affair. Garo was subjected to a comprehensive assessment in which lawmakers probed his educational background, professional work history, and, critically, his understanding of the duties and responsibilities attached to the office of Deputy Governor.

Committee members also quizzed the nominee on his specific plans for supporting the administration of Governor Yusuf and contributing to the development of Kano State. His academic and professional credentials were independently verified by the committee to ensure they met the standards expected of someone assuming one of the state’s highest executive offices.

By all accounts, Garo rose to the occasion. According to the committee’s report, the nominee demonstrated a firm and articulate grasp of what the role demands and presented coherent, detailed plans to complement and advance the existing agenda of the Yusuf administration.

Satisfied with the committee’s findings and recommendations, the full House voted to adopt the report, thereby formally confirming Murtala Sule Garo as Kano’s new deputy governor. The adoption was met with applause from members, reflecting broad legislative confidence in the nominee.

With his confirmation now secured, Garo is expected to be sworn in shortly, assuming the full weight of an office that plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day governance of Nigeria’s most populous state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who has been steering the affairs of Kano without a deputy since Gwarzo’s exit, can now count on a confirmed deputy to share the burden of governance — a development that political analysts say is essential for the administration to operate at full capacity.

Kano State, a major political and economic hub in northern Nigeria, has often been at the center of national political conversations, and the swift resolution of this vacancy through constitutional means will likely be seen as a positive signal of institutional stability under the current government.

All eyes will now turn to Garo himself as the incoming deputy governor prepares to step into one of the most scrutinized political offices in the country.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Kano State House of Assembly has confirmed Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor following the resignation of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, ending a leadership vacuum in the state’s executive arm.

His confirmation, conducted transparently and in strict accordance with Section 191(3)(c) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, signals institutional stability in Kano.

With a deputy now firmly in place, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration is fully positioned to govern one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states with renewed strength and focus.
