The Federal Government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of individuals allegedly involved in sexual assaults linked to a local festival in Ozoro community, Delta State.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, gave the directive in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
The directive followed the circulation of a viral video on Thursday showing alleged incidents of sexual assault during the Alue-Do Festival, popularly known as the “Festival of Fertility,” held in Ozoro Kingdom in Isoko North Local Government Area.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed concern over reports that women were subjected to harassment and assault during the event.
While commending the Delta State Police Command for its swift response, the minister called for a comprehensive probe into the incident.
She urged “a transparent, thorough, and accelerated investigation to ensure that all persons implicated are identified and brought to justice without delay.”
The minister described the alleged acts as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that they violate human dignity and the rule of law.
“No cultural or traditional practice can justify or excuse sexual violence in any form. Sexual assault is a serious criminal offence, and all allegations must be thoroughly investigated, with perpetrators held fully accountable under the law,” she said.
She noted that Nigeria’s Constitution and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act provide clear legal protections against such offences.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting women and girls, adding that the ministry would collaborate with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to support victims.
According to her, affected individuals would receive psychosocial care, medical attention, and legal assistance.
She also disclosed plans to engage traditional rulers and community stakeholders to address harmful practices and prevent a recurrence.
The ministry urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.
It added that collective action remains essential in preventing future incidents and safeguarding the rights and dignity of citizens.
