Gbenga Hashim, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has intensified consultations within the party following a meeting with Seyi Makinde in Abuja, signalling early political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, held in the nation’s capital, is seen as part of ongoing efforts to build alliances, strengthen relationships, and position key figures within a party still grappling with internal divisions.

Speaking after the discussion, Hashim described the engagement as productive and forward-looking, noting that talks centred on promoting unity within the PDP and enhancing its role in Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, discussions went beyond general unity, touching on sensitive issues such as cooperation among factions, leadership direction, and strategies for expanding support across different regions ahead of the 2027 polls.

Hashim commended Governor Makinde for his commitment to the PDP and his support for democratic values, emphasising that internal cohesion remains critical for the party’s ability to present a credible opposition and potential national leadership.

He stressed that at a time when Nigeria faces challenges requiring stability and inclusiveness, sustained dialogue among stakeholders is essential to resolving differences and strengthening the party’s competitiveness.

The meeting reflects a broader trend of quiet consultations among PDP leaders as they work to rebuild alliances, reinforce party structures, and manage internal tensions in preparation for the next election cycle.

What you should know

As the 2027 elections draw closer, internal consultations within the PDP are becoming more strategic.

Meetings like this indicate early moves to rebuild unity and consolidate influence among key stakeholders. With the party still dealing with internal divisions, such engagements are crucial for shaping leadership direction and electoral strategy.

The outcome of these consultations could determine how effectively the PDP positions itself as a strong opposition and a viable contender in the next general elections.
