Authorities have taken action following a viral bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, where students were captured on video assaulting a younger boy.
The school has expelled the students involved, while the Nigeria Police Force has asked the victim’s parents to come forward and file a formal complaint to enable the start of an official investigation.
The incident drew widespread attention after a disturbing video circulated on social media. In the footage, two students were seen beating, kicking, and dragging a younger boy believed to be in a junior class.
During the assault, one of the attackers reportedly used a belt to whip the victim while another stepped on his chest. The boy could be heard crying and screaming in pain as the attack continued. A third student, who appeared to be filming the incident, was also heard pleading with the attackers to stop.
The exact reason behind the attack has not yet been disclosed.
In a statement dated March 13, the management of Igbinedion Education Centre confirmed that the students responsible had been expelled after an internal investigation.
“We are aware of a video currently circulating online showing a serious incident of bullying and physical assault involving students at the school,” the school said.
“The behaviour shown in the video is deeply disturbing and violates the values and standards we uphold.”
The management emphasised that the school maintains a strict policy against bullying, harassment, and violence among students.
“Following an immediate investigation, the responsible students have been expelled from the school with immediate effect. Such conduct will never be tolerated within our school community,” the statement added.

The school also stated that the safety and well-being of students remain its top priority and confirmed that support is being provided to those affected. It added that the institution is cooperating with families and relevant authorities while noting that the students involved are minors.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command said the parents of the assaulted student have been invited to file a formal complaint to allow the investigation process to begin.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem explained that the step would help authorities officially identify the victim and proceed with the necessary legal procedures.
“Bullying is a criminal offence. No one is allowed to beat up and dehumanise someone like that,” she said.
“That is somebody’s child irrespective of whatever crime he may have committed.”
Reacting to the incident, Omosede Igbinedion described the development as deeply troubling.
She commended the school management for taking swift disciplinary action and reporting the case to the police.
The lawmaker also disclosed that the victim had been referred for an independent medical examination and treatment.
“Bullying in any form is unacceptable. Our schools must remain spaces where every child feels safe, protected, and respected,” she said.
She further urged parents, teachers, and the wider community to pay closer attention to young people and guide them properly to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The lawmaker also expressed sympathy to the victim and his family while calling for stronger efforts to promote kindness, empathy, and respect among students.
What you should know
Bullying in Nigerian schools has increasingly drawn public concern, particularly when incidents are captured on video and shared online.
While many schools have policies against harassment and violence, enforcement and reporting often depend on cooperation between school authorities, parents, and law enforcement.
Experts say early intervention, counselling, and strong disciplinary measures are critical to preventing repeated incidents and protecting students’ safety.
