Fresh political developments have emerged in Adamawa State as the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Wesley Bathiya, alongside 14 other lawmakers, resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The mass resignation has intensified speculations that Governor Umaru Fintiri may be preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The coordinated action by the Speaker and the lawmakers is seen by observers as a strategic political realignment, reportedly aimed at consolidating structures in anticipation of the governor’s expected move.
Reports indicate that the APC had earlier shelved its planned state congresses in Adamawa, a decision widely interpreted as an effort to accommodate Governor Fintiri and his political allies without internal resistance.
The postponement of the congresses reportedly generated concerns among some APC members, who questioned whether internal democratic processes were being compromised to facilitate a high-profile defection.
With the Speaker and a majority bloc in the 25-member Assembly formally leaving the PDP, the balance of power in the House appears to have shifted significantly.
Following the resignations, the Assembly is now effectively dominated by the APC.
However, the member representing Lamurde Constituency, Build Bauna, has not been clearly accounted for in the unfolding political developments. He was neither publicly heard from nor visibly present during plenary proceedings where the resignations were announced.
Political observers describe the situation as a significant weakening of the PDP’s structure within the State Assembly, further fueling speculations about the governor’s anticipated defection.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the governor’s camp were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
