The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has disclosed that officials linked to irregularities recorded in Kuje and Kabusa during the Federal Capital Territory elections will face investigation.

He stated that any staff found culpable would be sanctioned in line with the commission’s rules.

Amupitan also revealed that transporters blamed for delays in the movement of election materials to Kwali Area Council would be blacklisted. The delay reportedly affected the timely distribution of logistics during the polls.

The INEC chairman made the remarks on Wednesday while assessing the FCT elections at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The session is taking place four days after the conduct of the FCT council elections, as well as by-elections held in Rivers and Kano states last Saturday.

Beyond reviewing the conduct and results of those elections, the gathering is expected to provide a platform for Resident Electoral Commissioners to raise operational concerns and discuss preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.

All Resident Electoral Commissioners from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were invited to attend.

The meeting is also being attended by representatives of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions, who paid a courtesy visit to the INEC chairman. The leader of the delegation said their visit was aimed at fostering collaboration with INEC to enhance the credibility and effectiveness of local government elections nationwide.

Further updates are expected as deliberations continue.

What You Should Know

INEC has initiated a review of the recent FCT council elections following reported logistical shortfalls in Kuje, Kabusa, and Kwali.

Staff implicated in the issues will be investigated and could face disciplinary action if found responsible.

Transporters linked to delays may be barred from future engagements with the commission. The post-election review meeting also serves as an opportunity for electoral commissioners to assess operational challenges and begin early planning for the 2027 general election.

Strengthening coordination between INEC and state electoral bodies is a key focus of the discussions.
