The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the appointment of Peter Akpe as the deputy governor of Bayelsa State.
The lawmakers met and gave their support to Akpe’s nomination, clearing the way for him to take up the second-highest office in the state.
His confirmation means he will soon be sworn in and begin work alongside the governor.
Before this appointment, Akpe was serving as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri, helping to manage activities at the Government House.
He is also known as a pastor.
The deputy governor’s office became open after the death of Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in December 2025.
Ewhrudjakpo had been Bayelsa’s deputy governor since 2020 but slumped in his office in Yenagoa and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
His passing left the post empty and started a political process to find someone to fill the gap.
Efforts to name a replacement carried on for weeks as political leaders and groups discussed who should step into the role. With the assembly’s approval of Akpe, that process has now ended.
