Troops of the Nigerian Army under 8 Division have successfully repelled an ambush by suspected Lakurawa terrorist elements near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State, neutralising five attackers and recovering weapons and other items.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division.
According to the statement, the incident occurred while the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgha Koughna, was on his way to visit frontline troops deployed in the state.
While navigating the forested terrain considered volatile, the GOC’s convoy reportedly came under sudden and heavy gunfire from armed assailants believed to be members of the Lakurawa group.
Troops immediately responded, engaging the attackers in a fierce exchange. The army said the convoy’s security team applied superior firepower to overpower the ambushers.
“In a bold and decisive response, the GOC and his troops overwhelmed the attackers, neutralising five terrorists and successfully repelling the ambush. The swift counter-action not only secured the convoy but also thwarted what authorities described as a calculated attempt to destabilise security operations in the area,” the statement said.
Following the clash, troops conducted a sweep of the surrounding area and recovered several items, including one OJC gun, one PKT gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, a bandolier of PKT ammunition, rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, a camel bag containing ₦840,000, two mobile phones, and five motorcycles.
Military authorities stated that troops remain deployed in the area, maintaining heightened alertness to prevent further attacks.
The army added that the operation reflects the continued commitment of the 8 Division to safeguarding communities and countering terrorist threats across the North West region.
