The government of Canada has announced five new Express Entry draw categories for 2026, targeting skilled workers from Nigeria and other countries to address labour shortages.

Canada’s Immigration Minister, Lena Metlege Diab, made the announcement on Wednesday in Ottawa. She explained that the new plan is part of the country’s strategy to attract top talent from around the world.

“Today, we are introducing new categories designed to meet and support Canada’s evolving needs and reflect our government’s determination to attract the best talent to Canada,” Diab said.

Information released on Canada’s official immigration platform showed that the new Express Entry categories for 2026 will give priority to professionals who already have Canadian work experience.

These include medical doctors, researchers, and senior managers who have previously worked in Canada.

The new categories will also focus on transport workers and skilled military recruits who have job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces.

The government said the decision is aimed at strengthening important sectors of the economy and filling workforce gaps.

The announcement highlights Canada’s continued efforts to attract qualified professionals from different parts of the world, including Nigeria, to support economic growth and innovation through immigration.
