The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has announced that Muslims across Nigeria will search for the crescent moon on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to determine the start of Ramadan 1447 A.H.
According to the Council, if the crescent is sighted that evening, fasting will commence on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. If not, Ramadan will begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

In a statement signed by the NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Council expressed concern over challenges confronting Muslims in the country, including what it described as heightened Islamophobic hysteria, insecurity, and perceived media bias.
“The media have consistently failed to uphold the principles of truth, fairness, and objectivity in matters concerning Muslims,” the statement read.
Concerns Over Election Scheduling

The Council also criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for scheduling elections during the Ramadan period, describing the move as unsurprising but warranting close monitoring.
“We are watching very closely and expecting an immediate review,” the statement warned.
Call for Reflection and Prayer

The NSCIA urged Muslims to remain steadfast in faith despite prevailing challenges, quoting the Qur’anic verse “Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra” (“Verily, with hardship comes ease”).
It also referenced Qur’an 2:185, emphasising that Allah intends ease, not hardship, and encouraged believers to complete the prescribed period of fasting with gratitude.
Muslims were advised to use the holy month as a period for reflection, repentance, increased devotion, and prayers for peace and relief from the nation’s challenges.
