Fresh legislative moves to reconsider the 2027 presidential election date have led the National Assembly to cut short its recess and reconvene for an emergency plenary session in Abuja.
In a notice signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, lawmakers were directed to resume by 11 am on Tuesday for the special session.
“Very crucial decisions shall be taken by each Chamber during the session,” the notice read, adding that senators and members should “reschedule their engagements accordingly.”
According to sources within the National Assembly, the main purpose of the emergency sitting is to review the February 20, 2027 presidential election date earlier announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The sources said concerns have been raised because the proposed date falls within the period of Ramadan, which could affect voter participation.
“The ultimate aim is to give legislative backing to INEC’s request to address the concerns raised regarding the 2027 election slated to hold during Ramadan,” a senator said.
Another lawmaker disclosed that “the presidential poll date may be brought forward to February 13.”
INEC had earlier responded to the concerns, saying that it “remains sensitive to all legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation” and may seek legislative intervention where necessary.
The emergency plenary session is expected to allow lawmakers to deliberate on the matter and decide whether to adjust the election timetable in order to ensure wider participation and smooth conduct of the 2027 presidential election.
