More than 50 residents who survived the recent attack on the Woro community in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State are currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the violence.

The survivors suffered different levels of harm, including gunshot wounds, during the deadly assault that also extended to the neighbouring Nuku community.

The Senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Sadiq Umar, visited some of the injured victims in the hospital, where he expressed sympathy and described the incident as deeply heartbreaking.

He offered prayers for their quick recovery and assured them of his continued support throughout their treatment and healing process.

Senator Umar also commended President Bola Tinubu for deploying security forces under Operation Savannah Shield to restore order and pursue those behind the attack.

He further praised Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for what he described as a prompt response, particularly the directive to the State Emergency Management Agency to distribute relief materials to affected residents.

The lawmaker called for sustained and expanded security operations across Kwara North, noting that the area has continued to grapple with persistent security threats.

He urged residents to stay united, hopeful, and prayerful, while reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of his constituents and praying for lasting peace in the region.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical, operational and intelligence assets to Kaiama Local Government Area in response to the attack.

The Nigerian Police Force condemned the incident, describing it as tragic, and confirmed that a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the perpetrators.

Gunmen had attacked Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities on Tuesday, killing at least 75 people, burning shops and the residence of a traditional ruler, and forcing many residents to flee their homes.

Although some reports indicated a higher casualty figure, the Kwara State Police Command confirmed during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme on Friday that the death toll stood at 75.

Governor AbdulRazaq described the incident as a “pure massacre” and disclosed that at least 75 victims had already been buried.

President Bola Tinubu has also ordered the deployment of an army battalion to further strengthen security in the state under Operation Savannah Shield.

Several political groups, including the Northern States Governors’ Forum, have condemned the killings, describing them as barbaric.

What you should know

The attack on Woro and Nuku communities is one of the deadliest incidents recorded in Kwara State in recent years and has renewed concerns over worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s rural areas.

Despite increased security deployments and military operations, communities in parts of Kwara North continue to face violent attacks linked to armed groups. The federal and state governments have intensified responses through Operation Savannah Shield, combining police and military efforts.

However, the humanitarian impact remains severe, with dozens injured, homes destroyed and families displaced, underscoring the urgent need for sustained security and community protection.
