Fresh signs of political movement are emerging within Nigeria’s National Assembly as the 2027 general elections draw closer, with several serving senators preparing to leave the Red Chamber to seek governorship positions in their states.

According to The Sun, at least 11 incumbent senators are considering bids for state government houses.

The move reflects a growing trend of federal lawmakers aiming to shift from lawmaking at the national level to executive leadership at the state level, using their experience, reach, and political ties to boost their chances.

In Kano State, attention has turned to the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, who is seen as a major figure in the unfolding governorship race.

Even with recent political changes in the state, including Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s move to the All Progressives Congress, Jibrin is still regarded as a strong force.

His wide grassroots structure and years of empowerment programs have kept his support base firm across the state.

Ogun State is also witnessing growing political activity, with Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly called Yayi, positioned as a top contender.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, he plays a key role in federal budget matters.

Within the APC, many party leaders are said to be backing him as a possible successor to Governor Dapo Abiodun.

His long-running push for power rotation, especially the call for a governor from Ogun West, has boosted his standing in parts of the state.

In the North-Central zone, Nasarawa State is drawing attention following Senator Aliyu Wadada’s open declaration to run for governor.

His recent return to the APC is viewed as a calculated step to strengthen his support and secure party backing ahead of the primaries.

Kwara State presents a more delicate contest, with Senators Saliu Mustapha and Suleiman Sadiq Umar both being mentioned as serious aspirants.

Political watchers say zoning arrangements in the state will play a major role in deciding who eventually secures party tickets and wider support.

In Bauchi State, Senators Shehu Buba Umar and Abdul Ahmed Ningi are being tipped as possible rivals in what could turn into a closely fought race for the governorship.

Meanwhile, in Oyo State, Senator Abdulfatah Buhari has already announced that he will not return to the Senate, choosing instead to focus on his ambition to govern the state.

Other senators whose names are being linked to governorship plans include Tahir Monguno in Borno State and Barinada Mpigi in Rivers State.

Their possible entry into the race is adding to expectations that the 2027 elections will see stiff contests between experienced federal lawmakers and established political figures at the state level.
