A promising young life that once shone on Broadway’s most celebrated stages has been cut tragically short. Imani Dia Smith, a former child actress who portrayed Young Nala in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway, died on Sunday at age 25 following a violent stabbing at a residence in Edison, New Jersey.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call and found Smith suffering from stab wounds. She was immediately transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in critical condition, where medical staff later pronounced her dead.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has launched a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding Smith’s death. Authorities have remained tight-lipped about key details, including whether additional individuals were present during the incident and what may have precipitated the fatal attack.

The investigation moved swiftly. By Tuesday, law enforcement officials arrested 35-year-old Jordan D. Jackson-Small, charging him with first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and several weapons-related offenses. Prosecutors have confirmed that Jackson-Small was known to the victim, though they have not elaborated on the nature of their relationship. Court records do not yet indicate whether Jackson-Small has retained legal counsel.

Smith’s Broadway tenure, though brief, marked a significant achievement in her young career. Between 2011 and 2012, she performed as Young Nala in The Lion King, one of the longest-running and most successful productions in Broadway history.

Landing such a coveted role placed Smith among an elite group of child performers who have graced the theater’s most prestigious venues. The Lion King has been a launching pad for numerous young talents since its 1997 debut, and Smith’s participation represented the realization of a dream shared by countless aspiring actors.

The loss has sent ripples through the theatrical community, where child performers often form lasting bonds with cast members and crew. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the events that led to this devastating outcome.
