Tension rose quickly in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, on Thursday after Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo suddenly collapsed and was urgently taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.
The episode happened at about 1:30 pm inside his office, triggering swift intervention from aides and security personnel. Witnesses said he appeared to be in critical condition at the time he was moved into the hospital’s emergency ward.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo has since been stabilised and moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the FMC. Although no official explanation has been released about what triggered the incident, early indications from those familiar with the situation suggest a possible cardiac-related complication.

A close associate attributed the scare partly to his intense workload, saying, “He’s a workaholic; he should find time to rest.”
Security personnel have now sealed off the hospital premises, restricting movement around the treatment area. Senior officials of the state government have also visited to show support and monitor his progress.
Efforts to reach the deputy governor’s media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, were unsuccessful. However, hospital insiders told newsmen that Senator Ewhrudjakpo is receiving optimal medical attention and remains stable.
