Saudi Arabia Imposes New Visa Restrictions on Nigeria, 13 Other Countries

Saudi Arabia has introduced new visa restrictions affecting travelers from Nigeria and 13 other countries, limiting them to a single-entry visa valid for only 30 days.

The new policy impacts tourists, business travelers, and family visitors from affected nations but does not apply to Hajj, Umrah, diplomatic, or residency visa applicants. Besides Nigeria, the restricted countries include Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen.

Saudi authorities explained that the decision was made due to the misuse of multiple-entry visas. Some travelers had overstayed illegally or used long-term visas to participate in the Hajj pilgrimage without authorization. The government enforces strict quotas for Hajj pilgrims from each country, and the influx of unauthorized worshippers has contributed to overcrowding.

Officials have described the suspension of multiple-entry visas as a temporary measure, but no timeline has been provided for when it might be lifted. This policy shift comes ahead of the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. In 2024, over 1,200 pilgrims reportedly lost their lives due to extreme heat and congestion, a crisis authorities believe was worsened by unregistered attendees.

Saudi Arabia has yet to confirm whether additional measures will be introduced to regulate future pilgrimages.
