La Liga leaders Real Madrid were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, missing the chance to extend their lead at the top and giving Barcelona an opportunity to close the gap.
Xabi Alonso’s men, who had hoped to recover from their midweek Champions League defeat at Anfield, found themselves stifled by a resilient Rayo side that defended bravely and pressed with intensity throughout the encounter at Vallecas. The draw marked only the second time this season that Madrid have dropped points in the league.

Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances, Madrid were unable to find a breakthrough. Rayo successfully neutralized La Liga’s top scorer Kylian Mbappe, keeping him unusually quiet while also containing Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.
Rayo started brightly, with Andrei Ratiu forcing an early save from Thibaut Courtois, before Madrid grew into the game. Vinicius was denied by an impressive stop from Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, while Raul Asencio headed wide from close range at the other end.

After the break, Alonso replaced the booked Dean Huijsen with Eder Militao to shore up the defense against the lively Isi Palazon and Jorge de Frutos. De Frutos nearly put the hosts ahead when he hit the side netting after sneaking between two defenders.
Bellingham looked to continue his fine scoring form but was denied by Batalla at the near post. Mbappe finally found space around the hour mark, curling a shot just wide of the far post, while Batalla later palmed away a long-range strike from Fede Valverde.

Rayo, refusing to sit back, came close to snatching victory through Alvaro Garcia, who fired over in a late counterattack. Alonso introduced Trent Alexander-Arnold in the closing minutes as the England international continues his return from injury, but even that spark couldn’t change the result.
Arda Guler nearly won it for Madrid deep in stoppage time, but his deflected shot went just wide, ensuring Rayo earned a hard-fought point.
After the match, Alonso called for balance and patience despite the setback. “I want to keep growing, improving, with positive and constructive self-criticism—this is Real Madrid, we all know where we are and what we want,” he said.

Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, named one of the game’s standout performers, praised his team’s spirit. “To balance the difference in quality between us and Madrid, we had to push harder. But I saw a Madrid trying hard too, with a lot of intensity,” he told DAZN.
