Google today marked the 20th anniversary of Google Maps, celebrating two decades of transforming how over 2 billion monthly users explore and navigate the world.

In a statement on Thursday, Google highlighted the app’s evolution into an essential tool, offering comprehensive information and a vibrant community for sharing knowledge.

“Over the past two decades, it’s become an essential tool for more than 2 billion monthly users, providing both comprehensive information and a vibrant community for sharing knowledge,” the company said

Google outlined several new features introduced over the years, including personalised recommendations powered by Gemini.

“Ask Maps for curated ideas on where to go,” Google said, adding that the app’s “Directory” tab helps travelers navigate airports and that augmented reality features offer real-time insights into surroundings.

The company also pointed to the app’s ability to help users find the cheapest petrol stations nearby.

The Communications and Public Affairs Manager, of Google West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, said “Google Maps has evolved from a basic mapping tool to a dynamic platform that helps people explore, navigate, and discover new experiences.”
