President Bola Tinubu has officially signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State, pledging further support for the community.

According to a statement from the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the university will be situated in Tai, Ogoni. During the signing ceremony at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that the institution would empower the Ogoni people, providing opportunities for education and sustainable development.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development,” the President stated.

He acknowledged the environmental struggles of the Ogoni people and described the university as more than just an educational institution but a reaffirmation of his administration’s commitment to the Niger Delta. “For decades, the Ogoni people have led the fight for environmental restoration. By signing this bill, we are taking a decisive step toward addressing historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth, and prosperity,” he added.

Tinubu assured that the university would become a center of excellence, equipping young Nigerians with the expertise to address environmental challenges and drive clean energy solutions.

He commended the National Assembly for passing the bill and praised the Ogoni delegation for their relentless advocacy. “Your steadfast advocacy for justice is encouraging. It will be rewarded, I assure you,” he said.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, noted that FUET would prioritize interdisciplinary studies in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology to help address regional and national ecological challenges.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu also highlighted that the university would contribute to the restoration and development of Ogoniland, stressing the need for inclusive growth and environmental sustainability.

Senator Mpigi Barinada, who led the Ogoni delegation, expressed gratitude to the President for signing the bill and acknowledged the contributions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and NSA Ribadu in facilitating its passage. He described the establishment of the university as a beacon of hope for the Ogoni people and a step toward peace and reconciliation.
