Nigeria experienced yet another collapse of its national electricity grid on Wednesday, plunging power generation from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to just 1.5 MW between 11 am and 12 pm.

The Nigeria National Grid, via its official X account, confirmed the development, stating: “System restoration is in progress.” It further disclosed that all electricity distribution companies (DisCos) across the country, except Ibadan DisCo, had their loads drop to zero.

In a statement, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) assured its customers that work was ongoing to stabilise the system. “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” the utility said, adding that restoration efforts were underway.

What you should know

Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed multiple times in recent years, underscoring the fragility of the country’s electricity infrastructure.

Each collapse disrupts homes and businesses nationwide, deepening concerns over the government’s ability to deliver stable power supply.
