A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced a senior government official, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, to eight years in prison for embezzlement, a case that has drawn international attention not only for financial crimes but also for a scandal involving sex tapes.

According to the Director of Press for the Supreme Court, Hilario Mitogo, the Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds meant for professional travel expenses and using them for personal purposes. The misappropriated amounts reportedly ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich nation.

Engonga, who previously served as the head of the national financial investigation agency, was convicted alongside five other senior officials accused of similar offenses. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of $220,000 on him.

The disgraced official, often referred to by his nickname “Bello,” had earlier gained infamy when a series of sex tapes featuring him with the wives of other high-ranking officials surfaced online in November, while he was still in detention over the embezzlement case. Some of the videos were allegedly filmed in his office at the finance ministry.

The scandal sparked widespread reactions on social media, with users mocking the disgraced official through parody videos, songs, dances, and even posts about a fictitious virility drug humorously named “Balthazariem.”

The case has since become one of the most widely discussed corruption scandals in Equatorial Guinea, highlighting both the misuse of public funds and the culture of excess among some senior officials in the country.

What you should know

Baltasar Ebang Engonga, once a powerful financial investigator in Equatorial Guinea, fell from grace after being exposed for both financial misconduct and a sensational sex scandal.

His conviction, coupled with global attention on the leaked tapes, underscores the intersection of corruption, abuse of office, and public ridicule that has plagued some officials in the oil-rich Central African nation.
