The Ogun State High Court sitting in Sagamu has instructed former governor of the state, Gbenga Daniel, to submit the documents requested by the state government within two weeks.

The directive was issued on Tuesday during the resumed hearing of Suit No: HCS/371/2025, with Justice O. S. Oloyede presiding. The judge ordered Senator Daniel to make available the necessary papers in compliance with the government’s earlier request, which had also been extended to other residents of the affected area.

During the proceedings, O.T. Olaotan, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice, appeared for the government alongside R.B. Kadiri (DCL), A.E. Odukoya, and W.A. Onawole. He informed the court that an interlocutory injunction and counter-affidavits had already been filed in response to the motion presented by Daniel and had been duly served on the claimants’ counsel. Olaotan further noted that the matter was not yet ripe for hearing, and the court itself was not inclined to proceed with the application at that stage.

In response, A.O. Kotoye (SAN), who appeared with O.T. Are and A.O. Adeniyi on behalf of the claimants, applied for an extension of the interim order earlier granted by the court. The order, Kotoye explained, would automatically lapse after seven days if not renewed. The defence, however, urged the court to ensure that the claimants comply with the government’s two-week extension, stressing that the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning required the documents and that other individuals served with similar notices had already started submitting theirs.

Justice Oloyede, after listening to both parties, ordered that the status quo should be maintained and encouraged both sides to explore settlement options. He reiterated that the claimants and applicants must take advantage of the two-week window provided by the government and ensure that the necessary documents are submitted to the relevant agency in line with the request.

Following these submissions, both the claimants’ and the defendants’ counsels agreed to a further date for continuation of the matter. Consequently, Justice Oloyede adjourned the case to 13th October 2025 for the hearing of the pending applications.

What you should know

Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State and now a serving senator, has been directed by the Ogun High Court to provide documents requested by the state government regarding a disputed matter before the court.

Justice O. S. Oloyede emphasized the need for compliance within two weeks while maintaining the status quo to allow for possible settlement.

The government, represented by its legal officers, confirmed that counter-filings had already been made. The case, which has drawn attention due to Daniel’s political profile, has been adjourned until October 13, 2025, for further hearing.
