The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, declaring him ineligible to associate with the party in any capacity for the next 30 years.
In a statement issued on Monday by the National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) accused El-Rufai of falsely parading himself as a party member, forging documents, manipulating internal processes, and attempting to destabilise the party.
The statement noted that despite El-Rufai’s social media announcement of joining SDP, investigations revealed that he never officially registered with the party at his ward level in Kaduna State, as required by the party’s constitution. He was also accused of colluding with suspended party officials to present a false image of membership, further complicating the party’s internal unity.
According to the NWC, El-Rufai’s association with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and his role in allegedly drawing the SDP into an unapproved political coalition, violated the party’s values and principles.
“Consequently, El-Rufai has been banished and banned from applying to the membership, identifying with the name, insignia, logo, or participating in any affairs of the SDP for a period of 30 years, effective immediately,” the statement read.
The SDP further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant bodies to disregard any claims by El-Rufai of affiliation with the party, describing such claims as false and unauthorized.
El-Rufai, who recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), cited ideological differences as his reason for leaving the ruling party, but his attempts to affiliate with the SDP have now ended in controversy.
