In a bold political move, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Saturday that he has formed a new political party in the United States, aimed at shaking up the entrenched two-party system.
Labeling it the America Party, Musk said the initiative is designed to restore what he describes as “freedom” for American voters, who he believes are trapped in a “one-party system” masked as a democracy.
This marks a sharp turn in Musk’s political journey. Once a key supporter and major donor to President Donald Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign, the Tesla and SpaceX founder experienced a significant fallout with the president.
The breakdown came after Musk’s brief tenure as head of the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), a special task force created to cut federal jobs and rein in government spending. That effort ended in acrimony when Musk fiercely opposed Trump’s sweeping domestic spending package, which he argued would dangerously inflate the US debt.
Now, with the launch of the America Party, Musk is doubling down on his opposition to what he sees as financial recklessness and political complacency. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Musk cited results from an online poll he posted on July 4, where he asked users whether they wanted independence from the traditional two-party system. Of the more than 1.2 million participants, nearly two-thirds answered “yes.” In response, Musk posted: “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” He also shared a meme depicting a two-headed snake — a metaphor for the perceived indistinguishability between Republicans and Democrats — with the caption “End the Uniparty.”
Fallout With Trump and a Focus on 2026 Elections
The schism between Musk and Trump has turned into a very public political rivalry. Following Musk’s denunciation of the president’s landmark One Big Beautiful Bill—which funneled vast sums into domestic programs and added an estimated $3.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade—Trump fired back with threats to strip Musk’s businesses of federal funding and even consider his deportation. “We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked about revoking the naturalized citizenship Musk received in 2002.
Unfazed, Musk has vowed to target lawmakers who supported the bill, accusing them of betraying conservative fiscal principles. “They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” he declared earlier in the week.
He also outlined a political strategy that would concentrate resources and support in a handful of key races. “One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he said.
Musk’s plan seeks to make the America Party a swing force in Congress by influencing crucial legislation and tipping tight races in favor of fiscally conservative or reform-minded candidates.
Reactions and Historical Echoes
Reactions to Musk’s announcement have been swift and varied. Some see his move as a much-needed shake-up of a stagnant political system; others fear it could splinter the right-wing vote and inadvertently aid Democrats. Political analysts drew comparisons to Ross Perot’s independent presidential bid in 1992, which drew significant support but ultimately divided the conservative base and contributed to George H.W. Bush’s defeat by Democrat Bill Clinton.
“You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it,” one X user wrote in response to Musk’s announcement.
Still, Musk appears determined to upend the status quo. While details about the America Party’s structure, leadership, or platform remain scarce, Musk has made it clear that his goal is to create a disruptive force in American politics, one that transcends party lines and targets what he sees as political hypocrisy and fiscal irresponsibility.
What you should know
Elon Musk has officially formed the America Party, a new political movement aimed at challenging both major US parties.
Following a fallout with former ally Donald Trump over federal spending, Musk is now pledging to focus on critical House and Senate races and defeat candidates who supported the controversial spending bill. Though the party’s future impact remains uncertain, it has sparked a nationwide debate about third-party viability and the limits of bipartisan politics in America.
