President Bola Ahmed Tinubu touched down in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Friday evening to attend the 17th BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for July 6 and 7.

The presidential aircraft landed at Galeão Air Force Base at approximately 8:45 p.m., where he was warmly welcomed by senior Brazilian officials, including the base commander and two deputy ministers, Ambassador Carlos Sergio Sobral Duarte, responsible for Africa and the Middle East, and the deputy minister overseeing trade promotion, science, technology, innovation, and culture.

Tinubu’s visit to the South American nation comes at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva. His attendance signals Nigeria’s renewed commitment to deepening ties with BRICS member nations and harnessing opportunities to amplify its global economic engagement. The trip also represents one of the president’s strategic moves to integrate Nigeria more meaningfully into emerging global economic alliances.

A statement released on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, emphasized the importance of the president’s participation. It explained that Tinubu is scheduled to take part in a plenary session during which he will speak on Nigeria’s economic reforms aimed at enhancing the country’s global competitiveness.

His speech is expected to underscore recent government initiatives aimed at repositioning the nation’s economy, from subsidy removals and foreign exchange reforms to public-private partnerships in key sectors.

According to the statement, Tinubu’s broader agenda includes drawing attention to Nigeria’s untapped investment potential across critical industries. He is expected to hold high-level engagements with potential investors in agriculture, solid minerals, healthcare, and alternative energy, presenting Nigeria as a favorable destination for sustainable investment and collaboration.

The BRICS Summit, which brings together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and invited partners, has placed this year’s focus on practical cooperation across strategic domains.

In preparation for the summit, BRICS political negotiators held extensive discussions to align commitments on issues such as climate finance, governance of artificial intelligence, and combating socially determined diseases. The bloc’s emphasis remains on bridging developmental gaps and offering tangible solutions to the persistent structural challenges affecting countries in the Global South.

President Tinubu is not attending alone. He is accompanied by a delegation that includes five state governors: Hyacinth Alia of Benue, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, and Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger. Their presence signals a coordinated effort to represent diverse regional interests and project a unified Nigerian front to potential global partners.

As global attention turns to Rio for the summit, Tinubu’s address and the outcomes of his investment drive are expected to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s positioning within BRICS and influencing broader geopolitical and economic collaborations.
