The US Senate entered a prolonged and fiery debate early Sunday over former President Donald Trump’s proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping and controversial $4.5 trillion legislative package aimed at cementing key parts of his domestic legacy.
The bill, which seeks to extend Trump’s first-term tax cuts and intensify border security efforts, has sharply divided Republicans as they look ahead to the 2026 midterm elections.
The proposal would simultaneously slash Medicaid funding, threatening healthcare access for millions of low-income Americans, while adding over $3 trillion to the national debt.
Despite resistance from within his own party, Trump celebrated the Senate’s narrow 51-49 vote to begin debate. “Tonight we saw a GREAT VICTORY in the Senate,” he posted on his Truth Social platform. Two Republican senators joined all Democrats in voting against opening the debate.
Democrats, outraged by what they describe as a reckless giveaway to the wealthy, responded by demanding the full 1,000-page bill be read aloud on the Senate floor, a process expected to take 15 hours.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Republicans of concealing the bill’s content: “Republicans won’t tell America what’s in the bill, so Democrats are forcing it to be read start to finish.”
Among the bill’s most contentious elements is its plan to gut Medicaid, potentially leaving 8.6 million Americans without coverage and jeopardizing rural hospitals. It also aims to reverse climate-friendly tax incentives implemented under President Joe Biden, a move criticized by Trump’s former ally Elon Musk.
The billionaire called the bill “utterly insane and destructive,” arguing it “severely damages industries of the future.”
Independent reports suggest the bill would trigger a historic redistribution of wealth, stripping resources from the poorest 10% and enriching the wealthiest. Though a version of the legislation has cleared the House, both chambers must align on the final text before it can become law.
