In a major escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iran has launched a retaliatory missile attack on American military bases in Qatar and Iraq, following recent U.S. airstrikes on its nuclear facilities.

The Iranian assault, confirmed by both Iranian and Qatari officials, marks a dangerous turning point in the standoff between Tehran and Washington.

Loud explosions echoed across the skies above Doha late Monday, after six Iranian missiles were fired, reportedly targeting the Al Udeid Air Base — a key American military installation in Qatar that also serves as the forward headquarters of the U.S. Central Command.

Qatar’s Ministry of Defence has acknowledged the attack and strongly condemned it, labeling the strike a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty. In a statement released shortly after the incident, the ministry confirmed that the country’s air defense systems had intercepted the incoming missiles, preventing any casualties or structural damage. “There were no deaths or injuries,” the statement assured, while reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to regional stability and diplomatic resolution of disputes.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also confirmed the operation, declaring it a response to what it described as an “aggressive act” by the United States in bombing Iran’s nuclear sites. Codenamed “Annunciation of Victory,” the IRGC’s retaliatory mission was carried out with precision, according to Iranian media reports.

State-affiliated Tasnim News Agency stated that the attack was not only meant to send a “clear and strong message” to Washington but also to demonstrate Iran’s resolve in defending its sovereignty and critical infrastructure.

The strike on Al Udeid is just one part of the retaliation, with additional missiles reportedly launched toward U.S. facilities in Iraq. The full extent of those attacks, including any damage or casualties, is still being assessed.

This move comes in the wake of intensified hostilities between Iran and both the United States and Israel, following the latter’s initial bombing campaign on June 13, which triggered a series of retaliatory exchanges. Over the weekend, U.S. warplanes used bunker-buster bombs to target Iran’s nuclear sites — a development that many international observers feared could provoke a wider regional conflict.

As of now, Washington has not issued an official statement on the missile attack. However, analysts suggest that this latest development could prompt a swift and potentially severe response from the U.S. military, raising fears of a deeper military confrontation in the Gulf region.

The international community is now on high alert, with diplomatic channels scrambling to de-escalate a conflict that threatens to engulf the entire region in open warfare.

What you should know

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has officially confirmed launching six missiles at U.S. bases in Qatar and Iraq.

Qatar’s Defence Ministry says its air defense systems intercepted the missiles targeting Al Udeid Air Base, resulting in no casualties. The IRGC named the operation “Annunciation of Victory,” describing it as retaliation for the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities.
