Brazilian winger Raphinha has been crowned La Liga’s Player of the Year following a standout season that saw him lead Barcelona to a domestic double.

Now in his third campaign with the Catalan giants since his move from Leeds United, the 28-year-old delivered an impressive tally of 18 goals and nine assists. Known for his relentless work ethic, technical dribbling, and defensive contribution, Raphinha was pivotal to Barça’s dominance this season.

The accolade caps a remarkable turnaround for the winger, who was close to leaving the club during the last transfer window. Instead, newly appointed manager Hansi Flick made a bold decision—handing Raphinha the captain’s armband and extending his contract until July 2028.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal was named La Liga’s Under-23 Player of the Year, highlighting the club’s blend of youth and experience that powered them through a successful campaign.

What you should know
Raphinha, whose full name is Raphael Dias Belloli, was born on December 14, 1996, in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

He began his football journey in the youth ranks of Brazilian club Avaí before moving to Europe in 2016 to join Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães. His flair and pace quickly drew attention, leading to a transfer to Sporting CP in 2018 and then to French club Rennes a year later.

Raphinha’s breakthrough came during the 2020–21 Premier League season with Leeds United, where his creativity and dribbling lit up England’s top flight. In 2022, he secured a high-profile move to FC Barcelona, fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for the Catalan giants.

Known for his technical skills, relentless pressing, and ability to cut inside from the right flank, Raphinha has become a key figure at Barça. Despite transfer rumors in 2024, he remained with the club and was appointed captain by new manager Hansi Flick.

Under Flick’s leadership, Raphinha not only stayed but thrived, guiding the team to a domestic double and earning the La Liga Player of the Year award. He also represents Brazil at the international level and continues to be a fan favorite for his passion and dedication.
