The World Bank has called for deeper, impact-driven collaborations to tackle Africa’s pressing development challenges, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to address issues like climate change, health crises, and economic instability.

The call came during the closing ceremony of the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) 2025 Annual Meetings in Abidjan, where World Bank President Ajay Banga paid tribute to outgoing AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina.

Banga, reflecting on his decade-long relationship with Adesina, stressed that personal ties, while valuable, are insufficient without strategic action. “Friendship alone is not a strategy,” Banga remarked, highlighting the need for tangible results.

He pointed to the Mission 300 initiative, a joint effort by the World Bank and AfDB to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans, as a model of effective multilateral cooperation. “It’s a shared ambition that shows what’s possible when development banks work as a system,” he said.

The initiative aims to drive economic growth by attracting private sector investment and creating jobs to improve living standards across the continent. Banga underscored the urgency of delivering measurable outcomes, stating, “The eyes of the world are upon us. We need to show real progress, real results, and real opportunities.”

The AfDB’s shareholders also elected Sidi Ould Tah, former Mauritanian Finance Minister and President of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), as Adesina’s successor. Tah will assume leadership of the AfDB at the end of August, following Adesina’s 10-year tenure.

Banga expressed optimism about the AfDB’s future under Tah, pledging continued collaboration. “Our work is far from done, and we are united in our shared purpose,” he said.

The 2025 AfDB Annual Meetings, themed “Making Africa’s Capital Work Better for Africa’s Development,” drew over 6,000 delegates, including African heads of state and global development leaders. Banga praised Adesina’s leadership, thanking him for his “passion and commitment to Africa” and acknowledging the strengthened partnership between the two institutions.

As Africa faces mounting challenges, the World Bank’s call for results-driven partnerships signals a renewed commitment to transformative development, with Mission 300 and similar initiatives at the forefront of this effort.
