The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has once again called on Nigerians to pray for their leaders as the country grapples with multiple challenges, ranging from insecurity to economic hardship.

Delivering his Eid-el-Kabir message shortly after observing the Eid prayer at his palace, the Sultan emphasized the importance of spiritual and civic support for those in positions of authority. He stated that citizens should remain law-abiding and work toward national unity while offering constant prayers for the success of the country’s leaders.

He also urged security agencies to intensify their efforts in combating insecurity, expressing concern over communities still under siege by criminal elements. While acknowledging the ongoing efforts of security operatives, the Sultan said there is still much to be done to restore peace and stability across the nation.

In addition, the Sultan encouraged citizens to embrace agriculture as a pathway to economic self-reliance and national prosperity, especially during the ongoing wet season, which he described as an opportunity for food security.

Touching on the recent tragedy in Niger State, the Sultan expressed deep sorrow over the flood disaster that devastated Mokwa, claiming over 200 lives and displacing thousands. He called for support for the survivors and prayers to prevent a recurrence of such calamities.

Mokwa, a strategic hub connecting southern traders with northern food producers, was severely impacted after the Mokwa Bridge collapsed due to intense flooding. The Federal Government attributed the disaster to heavy rainfall exacerbated by climate change, unregulated construction, and poor drainage systems.

Sellers and livestock traders noted that the disaster had disrupted supply chains and contributed to a spike in the prices of rams during the Sallah festivities.

What you should know
The Sultan’s message serves as both a spiritual reminder and a national call to action. As climate change and insecurity continue to pose serious threats to communities like Mokwa, his appeal underscores the urgent need for both governmental intervention and citizen participation in fostering resilience and unity.
