The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a blend of sunny and cloudy weather conditions, along with thunderstorms, across various parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.

In its weather outlook issued Saturday in Abuja, the agency projected that most parts of the country would experience sunny skies on Sunday morning. However, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa States by afternoon and evening.

For the North-central region, NiMet forecasted sunny conditions with isolated thunderstorms later in the day in Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and Kogi States.

In the southern parts of the country, Sunday is expected to begin with thunderstorms in Cross River, Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States, with isolated thunderstorms also forecasted for the evening.

According to NiMet, Monday will see sunny skies with patches of cloud in the North, with possible morning thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa. Afternoon and evening storms are also likely in Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa States.

In North-central Nigeria, the weather will feature sunny skies interspersed with clouds, with isolated thunderstorms expected in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Plateau States.

Southern states including Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom are projected to have morning thunderstorms on Monday, followed by isolated storms later in the day.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, NiMet anticipates mostly sunny skies in the North during the morning, with thunderstorms later in the day in parts of Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa. States like Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, and Taraba are also expected to experience isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.

In the North-central region, the forecast includes sunny skies with clouds and likely afternoon or evening thunderstorms in the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Benue, and Niger States.

Meanwhile, southern states including Cross River, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom are expected to experience morning thunderstorms, with additional storms as the day progresses.

NiMet urged the public to take safety precautions as strong winds may precede thunderstorms. “Residents are advised to secure loose objects to prevent damage,” the agency warned.

The agency also advised against driving in heavy rain, encouraged disconnection of electrical appliances during storms, and warned against standing under tall trees due to the risk of falling branches. It further urged airline operators to consult NiMet for specific weather information to aid flight planning.

What you should know

NiMet, Nigeria’s national weather forecasting body, plays a crucial role in safeguarding lives and property through accurate weather predictions.

With the rainy season intensifying, its timely advisories help communities and sectors such as aviation, agriculture, and transport prepare for weather-related disruptions.
