18-Year-Old Apprentice in Anambra Sparks Outcry After Allegedly Impregnating 10 Girls

An 18-year-old apprentice in Anambra State has ignited widespread shock and public debate after allegedly impregnating 10 girls, including his master’s daughter and a salesgirl, within five months.

The case, brought to light by the Anambra State Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, on May 6, 2025, underscores serious concerns about sexual misconduct, teenage pregnancy, and the exploitation of vulnerable girls in Nigeria’s South-East.

As authorities grapple with the unprecedented situation, the incident has fueled calls for justice, community intervention, and stronger protections for young women.

The Allegations: A Disturbing Pattern

According to Commissioner Obinabo, the unidentified 18-year-old, who was sent to learn a trade in an undisclosed community in Anambra, began his spree just three months into his apprenticeship.

In a live video shared on social media, Obinabo detailed the sequence of events: within his first three months, the apprentice allegedly impregnated his master’s daughter and a salesgirl employed at the same business.

After being expelled by his master and returning to his village, he reportedly impregnated eight more girls over the next two months, bringing the total to 10. The boy’s mother, overwhelmed by the situation, reported the matter to Obinabo’s office, expressing fear whenever she saw a girl approaching her home.

Obinabo, visibly stunned, appealed for public advice, stating, “This one is beyond my capacity.” The case’s scale—10 pregnancies in five months—has raised questions about coercion, consent, and the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

While Obinabo’s statement suggested the boy used “magic” to lure the girls, a claim echoed in sensationalized headlines, no evidence supports this, and it likely reflects local cultural interpretations of his rapid succession of relationships.

The lack of specific details about the boy’s identity, the victims’ ages, or the exact location complicates verification, but the commissioner’s public disclosure lends credibility to the core allegations.

Teenage Pregnancy and Social Dynamics

The incident occurs against the backdrop of Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with teenage pregnancy, particularly in the South-East, where cultural and economic factors exacerbate vulnerabilities.

A 2023 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey reported that 19% of girls aged 15–19 in Anambra have been pregnant, driven by poverty, limited sex education, and early sexual debut (median age 16.5).

Anambra’s urban centers, like Awka and Onitsha, see higher rates due to social pressures and lax oversight in apprenticeship systems, where young men and women often work in close proximity.

The apprentice’s actions, while extreme, reflect broader issues within Nigeria’s informal trade sector, where apprentices—often teenagers—are sent to live with masters for years to learn skills like tailoring or mechanics.

These arrangements can blur boundaries, with masters’ families and employees interacting closely, sometimes leading to inappropriate relationships.

The impregnation of the master’s daughter and salesgirl suggests a breach of trust, while the subsequent eight pregnancies in the village point to a lack of parental or community supervision.

Posts on X, such as @Otowngist’s May 7, 2025, tweet calling it a “Teen Pregnancy Crisis,” highlight public outrage and demands for “Youth Accountability.” Users like @Authenticvoice6 emphasized the inclusion of the master’s daughter, framing it as a betrayal, while @DailyObserverNG noted the commissioner’s plea for guidance, reflecting the case’s complexity. The sensational claim of “magic,” amplified by @Lagospostng, has drawn skepticism, with some users urging focus on accountability over folklore.

Legal and Social Implications

Under Nigerian law, the case raises serious concerns, particularly if any of the girls are minors (under 16, per the Child’s Right Act 2003).

Statutory rape charges could apply, as seen in similar Anambra cases, like the 2023 arrest of a 31-year-old man for impregnating a 14-year-old.

However, Obinabo’s statement did not specify the victims’ ages or confirm police involvement, leaving the legal status unclear.

The boy’s mother’s report suggests no formal arrests as of May 6, 2025, but the commissioner’s public appeal may prompt action by the Anambra State Police or the Ministry of Justice.

The case also echoes regional patterns of sexual exploitation. In 2023, a 17-year-old in Rivers State was arrested for impregnating 10 women in a baby factory, highlighting organized schemes exploiting young girls.

While no evidence links the Anambra case to trafficking, the rapid succession of pregnancies raises questions about potential coercion or manipulation, especially given the apprentice’s youth and limited resources.

The impregnation of 10 girls in five months—averaging two per month—suggests a pattern that may involve more than consensual relationships, warranting investigation into the girls’ circumstances and consent.

Socially, the incident has sparked outrage and fear. The boy’s mother’s anxiety, as noted by Obinabo, reflects the stigma faced by families in tight-knit communities, where such scandals can lead to ostracism.

Past Anambra cases, like a man banished in 2019 for impregnating his daughter, show communities resorting to vigilante justice when legal systems lag.

The involvement of the master’s daughter adds a layer of betrayal, as apprentices are often treated as family, amplifying the sense of violation.

What you should know
The case poses significant challenges for authorities. Obinabo’s office, tasked with protecting women and children, must navigate the welfare of the pregnant girls, who may face stigma, health risks, and economic hardship.

Nigeria’s teenage pregnancy rate contributes to high maternal mortality (512 per 100,000 live births), and the girls will need medical and psychosocial support.

Identifying the victims, verifying their ages, and ensuring their safety are urgent priorities, as is determining whether the apprentice’s actions involved coercion or abuse.

The lack of clarity about the “magic” claim complicates public perception. In Anambra, beliefs in charms or spiritual manipulation, as seen in a 2019 Delta case where a boy allegedly used a love charm to impregnate the girls.
