Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has once again appealed for strengthened air-defence support from international partners, following a wave of Russian missile strikes that claimed seven lives in Kyiv on Friday.
His renewed call came on Saturday, as the country grappled with the aftermath of the attacks and fresh reports of casualties in the south.

Friday’s strikes tore through several residential buildings in the Ukrainian capital, marking yet another escalation in a war that is approaching its fourth winter. With diplomatic solutions stalled and energy concerns rising, fears are mounting over Ukraine’s ability to protect its cities and infrastructure in the cold months ahead.
Authorities confirmed on Saturday that four more people were killed in separate Russian attacks in Ukraine’s southern region, intensifying concerns over the scale of bombardments still facing the country.
“Ukraine needs support that saves lives: more air-defence systems, more protective capabilities and greater resolve from our partners,” Zelensky said on social media, stressing that the continued loss of civilian lives underscores the urgent need for additional military assistance.
Officials also revealed that the death toll from Friday’s attack on Kyiv had increased to seven after an elderly woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
Among the victims was Nataliia Khodemnchuk, the wife of a Chernobyl nuclear plant operator who lost his life during the 1986 disaster. Zelensky noted the painful symbolism of her death.
“Nearly four decades later, Nataliia was killed in a new tragedy caused once again by the Kremlin,” he said.
Other casualties included a couple in their 70s and a 62-year-old resident.

In a counterstrike, Ukraine announced on Saturday that it had targeted a Russian oil refinery near Moscow. According to the Ukrainian army, the facility in the Ryazan region was hit as part of “efforts to reduce the enemy’s ability to launch missile and bomb strikes”.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has frequently carried out drone and missile operations deep inside Russian territory, aiming to disrupt military logistics and weaken Moscow’s strike capabilities.
Ryazan governor Pavel Malkov said Russian air-defence units had intercepted 25 Ukrainian drones overnight. He added that “falling debris caused a fire on the premises of one enterprise” but reported no injuries.
