Youths burn Kwankwaso red cap
Some youths in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State have reportedly set fire to red caps linked to the Kwankwasiyya Movement following former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s decision to support the 2027 presidential bid of Peter Obi, with Kwankwaso serving as Obi’s running mate.
The incident occurred shortly after political parties and their candidates signed a peace agreement ahead of the 2027 general elections, with campaigns for presidential and National Assembly seats now underway.
A video circulating on social media showed a group of youths gathered along a street in Kiru, where they chanted as several red caps associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement were placed together and set ablaze.
The footage, which lasted about three minutes and 19 seconds, also captured people watching the incident while wearing red caps carrying the infinity symbol associated with President Bola Tinubu.
The action has led to claims that the youths were mobilised by Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, the member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. However, the allegation has not been independently confirmed.
Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, rejected the incident as genuine and described it as a political stunt allegedly organised by opponents of the movement.
Mohammed alleged that similar scenes had been created in the past, claiming that people were sometimes given money to participate in such activities and present themselves as supporters or former members of the movement.
He further claimed that some of the people allegedly recruited for previous demonstrations later complained after failing to receive the payments they were promised.
According to him, the latest incident was part of efforts by political opponents to create the impression that support for the Kwankwasiyya Movement was declining in Kano.
He accused those behind the alleged stunt of buying red caps, recruiting people and arranging public displays intended to portray a weakening of the movement ahead of the 2027 elections.
