Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has addressed concerns surrounding alleged delays in the disbursement of allowances to the Super Falcons ahead of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final.

Appearing on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, Dikko clarified that the delays were not intentional but were due to the bureaucratic processes involved in releasing government funds.

“People need to understand that this money is never delayed deliberately. It is because of the processes for the government,” he explained.

Dikko assured that all bonuses, including those for the final match, had been approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and released by the Nigerian Football Federation. He emphasized that efforts were underway to ensure the players received their payments no later than the close of business Friday.

He also pointed out that the Super Falcons have consistently been included in the annual national sports budget and emphasized the administration’s resolve to ensure equity between the men’s and women’s teams.

“At least, the females are getting the decent bonuses they deserve,” Dikko said, noting that while the men’s team receives up to $10,000 per tournament, the women’s side is also receiving meaningful compensation.

The sports chief further urged Nigerians to understand the procedural nature of government fund disbursement and to continue supporting the team.

‘Focus Is To Win WAFCON’

Looking ahead to the final match against Morocco at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Dikko expressed strong optimism, highlighting the team’s campaign theme, Mission X, which symbolizes their quest for a historic tenth WAFCON title.

He praised the Super Falcons for staying focused despite the distractions and acknowledged the players’ resilience and determination.

“Focus is to get the cup tomorrow,” he said, noting that he preferred not to predict the score but remained confident in the team’s chances.

Dikko also appreciated the wave of encouragement the team has received from across the nation, including motivational messages from the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and other dignitaries.

What You Should Know

Chairman Shehu Dikko confirmed that the delay in the Super Falcons’ allowances was due to routine government procedures, not negligence.

He stated, “The instruction is that they should try everything possible to make sure the girls receive their money at the latest by close of business today,” and emphasized President Tinubu’s approval and the NFF’s readiness to disburse funds.
