VIDEO: Angela Okorie Apologizes to Mercy Johnson After Prison Release

In a stunning turn of events following a widely publicized cyberbullying case that captivated Nigeria’s entertainment sector, Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has publicly apologized to fellow actress Mercy Johnson Okojie, just days after securing her release on bail from Suleja Prison.

The controversy escalated rapidly last week when operatives from the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Center, Abuja, arrested Okorie at her Lagos residence on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The arrest followed formal complaints of sustained cyberbullying against fellow actress Mercy Johnson Okojie, one of Nollywood’s most celebrated figures.

Following her arrest, Okorie was brought before an Abuja court on Wednesday, January 29, where she was remanded to Suleja Prison pending further proceedings. The case drew immediate attention from both legal experts and entertainment industry stakeholders, reigniting debates about the consequences of social media feuds and the enforcement of Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.

The actress’s fortunes shifted on Friday, January 30, when Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted her bail application. Represented by lawyer Earnest Nwoye, Okorie was released on bail set at N5 million with one surety in like sum—a significant amount that underscores the seriousness with which the court viewed the allegations.

In a heartfelt video message that has since gone viral across social media platforms, a visibly emotional Okorie addressed Mercy Johnson directly, marking a stark departure from the acrimony that had characterized their relationship.

“This video is specifically for Mercy and her kids and her family. I am not perfect, and I want to apologize,” Okorie stated in the video. “If it’s my words, anything I’ve written, anytime your name pops up on social media, I am deeply sorry.”

In perhaps the most significant portion of her statement, Okorie retracted previous inflammatory accusations: “You are not a witch. You are not what people are calling you. I just want to make peace.”

The actress went further, invoking motherhood and the possibility of future connections between their families. “Our kids may meet and become friends, and as mothers, we cannot stop that,” she said, striking a conciliatory tone that few had anticipated.

Okorie also acknowledged her role in perpetuating negativity: “I do not condone bullying, and I apologize for anything I might have done or said against you, knowingly or unknowingly. This is a new beginning. You are my friend, and I will never listen to gossip about you again. I love you, and I pray that God blesses and lifts you higher.”

The case has also sparked conversations about the toxic culture of social media feuds within Nollywood. Several industry figures have called for greater professionalism and conflict resolution mechanisms within the entertainment community.

Mercy Johnson Okojie, known for maintaining grace under pressure, has not issued a public response to the apology as of press time.

While Okorie has been granted bail, legal proceedings in the cyberbullying case are expected to continue. The conditions of her bail and the ongoing nature of the case may influence both actresses’ public conduct going forward.

Industry watchers are now waiting to see whether Mercy Johnson will accept the apology and whether this incident will indeed mark “a new beginning,” as Okorie hopes, or whether legal consequences will continue to unfold.

For now, the case stands as a cautionary tale about the intersection of celebrity, social media, and the law in modern Nigeria—a reminder that words posted online can have very real consequences offline.
