The United States Department of State has warned of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and schools in Nigeria, urging citizens to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
In a notice issued on Monday, the Embassy of the United States in Abuja alerted American citizens to the potential security risk.
“The US embassy in Abuja informs US citizens of a possible terrorist threat against US facilities and US affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the statement said.
The embassy advised Americans to increase awareness of their surroundings, avoid predictable routines and review security precautions with their families to reduce potential risks.
However, the notice did not specify the source of the threat.

The warning comes months after Donald Trump ordered US airstrikes in Nigeria on Christmas Day, saying the operation targeted jihadist groups operating in the country.
Trump had previously argued that Christians were facing persecution in Africa’s most populous nation, a claim that remains contested in a country where violence has affected both Christian and Muslim communities.
The security alert also coincides with broader global warnings issued by the United States following recent military actions by Washington and Israel against Iran.
Iran has since responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US-aligned countries in the region, raising concerns about possible retaliatory threats against American interests worldwide.
What you should know
The United States regularly issues security advisories to its citizens abroad when intelligence suggests potential threats to diplomatic missions, schools, or businesses linked to the country.
Such warnings are often precautionary and may not always indicate an imminent attack. Nigeria has faced security challenges from extremist groups and armed criminal networks in recent years, which has led foreign missions to maintain heightened security measures.
The latest advisory reflects Washington’s broader global security concerns amid rising geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflicts involving US allies and adversaries.
