US Suspends Foreign Aid, Launches Investigation into Past Allocations

The United States Mission to Nigeria has announced an investigation into how past foreign aid to Nigeria and other countries has been utilised. This development follows President Donald Trump’s January 20, 2025, decision to suspend all foreign aid for 90 days, citing concerns over global destabilisation and misalignment with American interests.

The move comes amid growing calls for a comprehensive review of funds allocated through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), particularly in the health sector. In a statement on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the US Mission to Nigeria confirmed that robust monitoring systems are in place to track past assistance provided by the US government.

The US Mission also condemned ongoing terrorist violence in Nigeria, particularly attacks by Boko Haram. It reiterated the US government’s long-standing designation of Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) since November 14, 2013. This designation is aimed at restricting the group’s financial activities, prosecuting its members, and preventing their travel to the United States.

Despite the aid suspension, the US government reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Nigeria and regional partners to combat terrorism and enhance security in West Africa.
