Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has revealed that his administration inherited a 13-year backlogof unsettled insurance claims for families of deceased police officers. Speaking at the unveiling of the Police Insurance Claims Management Portal in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun emphasized the urgent need to resolve these long-standing claims.

According to him, the backlog, dating from 2010 to 2023, left many families in financial distress. Determined to address the issue, his administration engaged defaulting insurance providers and enforced compliance, leading to significant progress. Prior to Tuesday’s event, N17.8 billion had already been disbursed to 6,465 beneficiaries across eight presentation phases.

Continuing this commitment, the 9th phase saw an additional N3 billion disbursed to 706 beneficiaries, covering policy years 2020 to 2024. In total, N20.8 billion has now been paid out to 7,171 families of fallen officers.

Egbetokun also launched a specialized training program for Insurance Desk Officers nationwide, aimed at equipping them with the expertise needed to manage claims efficiently. He urged officers to embrace the new digital system, which is designed to streamline processes, enhance transparency, and eliminate bureaucratic delays in insurance administration.

The IGP reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving police welfare through technology-driven solutions, ensuring that the families of officers who served with honor receive the support they deserve.
