US Announces Closure Of Embassy In Nigeria
The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed to the public on Monday, September 7, 2026, as the United States observes its annual Labour Day holiday.
The closure will affect the two major US diplomatic missions in Nigeria as part of the holiday schedule being observed by the American diplomatic authorities in the country.
Members of the public who need consular services have been advised to take note of the development, as regular activities at the missions will not take place on the affected day.
Routine services, including visa-related activities and other consular duties, will be suspended during the holiday.
Applicants who had planned to visit either the Abuja embassy or Lagos consulate on Monday will therefore need to wait until normal operations resume.
The United States Mission said the holiday closure forms part of its official list of public holidays for the rest of 2026.
The schedule covers both holidays observed in the United States and those recognised in Nigeria.
The development comes shortly after the US Embassy announced a change in the handling of routine visa services in Nigeria.
From August 1, 2026, routine visa processing was moved to the US Consulate General in Lagos.
The temporary closure will not affect the importance of the consulate’s regular visa operations once the holiday is over, but applicants are expected to plan their appointments and submissions around the announced date.
US Labour Day is observed every year on the first Monday of September.
The American holiday is dedicated to recognising workers and their contributions to the country’s development.
