Donald Trump is set to receive an extraordinary welcome this week as he embarks on an unprecedented second UK state visit, with Britain relying on royal ceremony to charm the unpredictable American president.
The visit will feature a grand carriage ride with King Charles III, a military jet flyby, and an elaborate state banquet at Windsor Castle. The aim is to appeal to Trump’s admiration for the monarchy while strengthening ties with Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of discussions on trade, tariffs, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The carefully planned events will all take place outside London to ensure Trump is shielded from expected protests. Demonstrations are already scheduled in the capital against the 79-year-old Republican leader.
Although Starmer and Trump come from sharply different political traditions, the Labour prime minister has made deliberate efforts to maintain a cordial relationship since Trump’s return to the White House in January. In February, Starmer personally delivered King Charles’ invitation to the Oval Office, where Trump praised the monarch, currently battling cancer, as a “great, great gentleman.”
Trump’s strong connection to Britain is well known his Scottish heritage and fondness for royal pageantry have long shaped his enthusiasm for such visits. During his presidency in 2019, Trump enjoyed a state visit with Queen Elizabeth II, and now becomes the first US president ever to receive a second invitation.

Prince William and Princess Catherine will begin the visit on Wednesday by welcoming Trump and First Lady Melania to Windsor. Later, King Charles and Queen Camilla will host a royal procession, a Beating Retreat ceremony, and a banquet. Trump is also expected to make a private stop at the late Queen Elizabeth’s grave, paying respects to the monarch who passed away in 2022.
On Thursday, politics will dominate the agenda at Starmer’s Chequers country retreat. British officials hope to finalize both a “world-leading tech partnership” and a “major civil nuclear deal” with the American delegation. Ukraine is also expected to feature heavily in the discussions, with Starmer and other European leaders continuing efforts to ensure Trump maintains support for Kyiv, even as he signals openness toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump will join Queen Camilla and Princess Catherine for her own engagements, including a tour of the Queen Mary Dolls’ House and participation in a scouting event. Catherine’s presence will carry added significance, as she has recently reemerged in public life following treatment for cancer.
Despite the grandeur, sensitive issues linger. The White House indicated Trump intends to discuss “how important it is for the Prime Minister to protect free speech in the UK,” echoing concerns raised by Elon Musk at a far-right rally in Britain. Adding to the tension, Prime Minister Starmer recently dismissed Peter Mandelson, the UK’s ambassador to Washington, due to his ties with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein a matter that continues to cast shadows over Trump himself.
