US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet New York’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, on Friday, despite repeatedly attacking the 34-year-old politician during the election season.

Trump, who again pushed his false claim that Mamdani is a “communist,” confirmed on his Truth Social platform that the meeting “will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st.”

Mamdani’s spokesperson, Dora Pekec, affirmed the meeting, noting that it aligns with tradition for an incoming mayor to visit the president. She emphasized that the Mayor-elect intends to discuss public safety, economic concerns, and the affordability agenda supported by more than one million New Yorkers.

The upcoming conversation brings together two figures who both grew up in Queens, though their outlooks and political approaches differ sharply. While Trump often highlights Wall Street’s stock market gains as evidence of success, Mamdani frames New York’s economic health around rising living costs and daily struggles affecting the city’s more than 8 million residents.

Mamdani made history as the first mayoral candidate in New York since 1969 to surpass the one-million-vote mark. His campaign was anchored in promises of affordable housing, expanded childcare access, free bus transportation, and city-operated grocery stores, proposals that analysts say may face significant hurdles.

Trump, known for his hardline anti-immigration rhetoric, repeatedly mocked Mamdani’s South Asian name and hinted he could block federal funds to New York following the mayor-elect’s victory. “Mandami, whatever the hell his name is,” Trump said recently, intentionally mispronouncing the Uganda-born leader’s surname.

Mamdani responded forcefully during his victory speech, directing a message at Trump: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you, turn the volume up!” His remarks drew loud cheers from supporters. Later, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the president had indeed watched Mamdani’s address.

What you should know

Zohran Mamdani, New York’s mayor-elect, is set to meet President Trump after a tense campaign marked by sharp exchanges.

Despite Trump’s repeated attacks and mischaracterizations, Mamdani maintains his focus on affordability and public welfare. Their meeting signals an early test of cooperation between two sharply contrasting political figures.
