Tems Opens Up About Her Struggles Before Stardom

Before the Grammys, sold-out arenas, and global stardom, Tems was simply a hopeful young singer who once stepped onto a school stage convinced she was moments away from greatness.

In a candid and disarmingly honest interview with Big Boy TV, the “Crazy Tings” crooner pulled back the curtain on one of the most humbling moments of her early career, a moment that might have broken a lesser artist but instead appeared to forge her into the boundary-defying performer she is today.

“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer, and I thought I was going to be receiving a standing ovation,” Tems recalled, the memory clearly still vivid despite the years and accolades that now separate her from it. “But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me.”

The image is as striking as it is sobering—a young woman clutching her ambitions on a school stage while an unforgiving crowd hurled both ridicule and projectiles in her direction.

It is the kind of story that, told in retrospect, carries the bittersweet weight of irony. The same audience that once dismissed her with flying bottles would today be hard-pressed to secure a ticket to one of her shows.

But in the moment, it was simply painful.

What distinguishes Tems’ story, however, is not the rejection itself—countless artists have faced early indifference or outright hostility—but rather what she chose to do with it.

Rather than recalibrate her sound to appease the crowd, she doubled down on her distinctiveness. Where many of her peers gravitated toward familiar covers and commercially safe sounds, Tems stubbornly refused to dilute her artistry, a decision she acknowledges may have invited some of the early skepticism she encountered.

Looking back now, Tems expressed no regret about the rocky road that preceded her breakthrough. If anything, she views those early indignities as essential chapters in a story that could not have been written any other way.

She is glad, she said, that she never compromised.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Despite being booed off stage and pelted with plastic bottles early in her career, Tems refused to abandon her unique sound in favor of crowd-pleasing familiarity. That unwavering commitment to originality—the very thing that once invited ridicule—ultimately became the foundation of her Grammy-winning success.

Her story is a powerful reminder that authenticity, even when met with rejection, is often the most strategic bet an artist can make.
