Utah Governor Spencer Cox has confirmed that the man arrested over the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was romantically involved with a transgender roommate and had been described by his family as leaning left politically.
Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, Cox was asked about the suspect, Tyler Robinson, and reports that he lived with and was romantically linked to a trans partner.

“Yes, I can confirm that,” Cox replied. “The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to a female. This partner has been incredibly cooperative, had no idea that this was happening, and is working with investigators right now.”
The governor emphasized that it was still unclear whether the partner’s transitioning had any connection to Robinson’s alleged motive. “I’m not sure about that piece right now,” Cox said. “Again, all of these things—we’re trying to figure out.”

Reports of Robinson’s relationship surfaced Saturday, triggering an uproar among far-right commentators. Conservative podcaster Laura Loomer, a close ally of President Donald Trump, fueled speculation by asking whether “there is a Trans terror cell that groomed Tyler Robinson” and called for the “trans movement” to be designated a terrorist group.
Elon Musk also weighed in, endorsing a post on X that called for a ban on transgender hormone therapy, replying simply: “Absolutely.”
Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead Wednesday during a speaking event at a Utah university, was a vocal critic of transgender rights and a close Trump ally.

Governor Cox, who has urged Americans to reduce the toxic tone of political discourse, told The Wall Street Journal earlier that Robinson had been described by family and friends as “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” On Sunday, while he did not use the same language, Cox confirmed that those close to Robinson said he was “not a fan” of Kirk.
What You Should Know
Charlie Kirk’s assassination has added fuel to America’s already polarized debates on politics, ideology, and transgender rights.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed that suspect Tyler Robinson had a transgender partner but stressed that the partner had no link to the crime and has been cooperating with investigators.
Kirk, a staunch Trump ally and critic of the trans rights movement, was shot while speaking at a Utah university. Far-right figures, including Laura Loomer and Elon Musk, have used the revelation to push broader narratives against transgender people.
Robinson’s family reportedly described him as left-leaning and unsupportive of Kirk. The investigation continues as officials seek to separate fact from speculation.
